Paolo Costagli’s blue sapphire sautoir necklace comes from his Ombre Collection --a line of custom made fine sapphire jewelry inspired by the romantic Tuscan summers of his youth. Designed with blue sapphires and the iconic Brillante motif in the form of charms, this Ombre Sautoir Necklace echoes the unmistakable art deco aesthetic of glamour and opulence. A total of 45.11 carats of oval sapphires embellishes the piece. This vintage inspired blue sautoir necklace has a 37-inch yellow gold chain that goes well below the décolletage and secures with lobster clasp.
Sautoir necklaces reached peak popularity in the 1920’s, complementing the flowing silhouettes of the fashion styles of the golden era. However, this style was first worn by Queen Alexandra during the Edwardian period. Its length, which is longer than opera necklaces, made it quite versatile allowing the chain to be worn in multiple styles --as one long chain draped over the neck, looped twice as a shorter necklace, around the wrists, and even as a headdress. Coco Chanel is one of the most iconic wearers of the sautoir necklace. Her version of the necklace is composed of pearls and rhinestones in an elegant unbroken chain.
The Ombre Collection is Paolo Costagli’s ode to the beauty of sapphires and romantic Tuscan summers. According to the jewelry designer, the colors and textures of sapphires capture the essence of the Mediterranean Sea almost perfectly. The stones used in this collection were hand selected in varying sequences to ensure top quality and to create a unique identity in the jewelry designs. Contrary to popular belief, sapphires exist in a wide variety of hues including green, pink, yellow, and even orange. No matter the color they are in, they have outstanding brilliance. They are also among the hardest gemstones, scoring 9 on the Mohs scale.
