Ruby is a variety of the mineral species Corundum. Well known in its orange-red to purple-red color, ruby is among the hardest and toughest material in nature, therefore making it an all time favorite gem for everyday use. Depending on its country of origin and size, it could be extremely rare, with very limited availability, particularly if unheated. Improving the appearance of Corundum with heat or oil is an acceptable common practice in the trade.
