Details of This Jewel

This orange sapphire sautoir necklace by Paolo Costagli comes from his Ombre Collection --a line of custom made fine sapphire jewelry inspired by the romantic Tuscan summers of his youth. The necklace has a 37-inch 18k yellow gold chain embellished with oval orange sapphires and the iconic Brillante motif --a signature Paolo Costagli design. You will find a total of 45.78 carats of orange sapphires in this Tuscan inspired necklace. This orange sautoir necklace can be worn on its own draped over the neck to flatter a slim silhouette, or it can be paired with shorter, more delicate pieces for a modern yet glamorous look.

Sautoir necklaces were first designed in the Edwardian period with military chains as its inspiration. Queen Alexandra favored the style and was seen wearing the necklace quite often. Like most trends, the sautoir came and went until it reached its peak popularity in the 1920’s. This comes as no surprise because the sautoir necklace’s length complemented the flowing fashion styles of the era. Moreover, women became creative with how they wore the design --as a long chain draped over the decolletage, looped around the neck giving an illusion of multiple necklaces, backwards with the tassels draped over their bare backs, and even as bracelets. The sautoir necklace’s place in the fashion world became even more secure when Coco Chanel wore them --hers, usually an unbroken chain of pearls and rhinestones.

The Ombre Collection is a celebration of the beauty of sapphires and Tuscan summers. Designer Paolo Costagli chose sapphires as his medium in which to translate how he remembers the almost magical times he spent by the Mediterranean Sea. For this collection, he selects sapphires in various sequences to ensure quality and to give each jewelry piece a unique identity. The stones were then reverse set on gold for unmatched brilliance.
