This black diamond ring by Paolo Costagli is made truly extraordinary by the addition of black spinel. Though not exactly black in color, the spinel in this premium statement ring is of an exceptional deep blue which adds a gorgeous depth to the piece. The emerald-cut spinel weighing 12.38 carats sits on the middle of the ring cushioned by round black diamonds on all sides. More diamonds radiate in a “sprinkled” pattern around the thick 18kt rose gold band, giving the ring an eternal sparkle.

Spinels have been heralded for their beauty for centuries. Technically, spinels are crystals but because of their properties, they have been used as gemstones for the longest time. Like tourmalines, these crystals come in a wide range of colors including red, pink, and violet. But perhaps, the most arresting variety of this gemstone is the blue spinel. Blue spinels are highly valued for their intense color which oftentimes, rivals the sapphire. They can be quite rare and are mined mostly in Asian regions and a select African countries. Apart from their color, the spinel’s hardness (an 8 on the Mohs scale) is also impressive and contributes to its value.
